Description

The Dark Side of the Light Chasers: Reclaiming Your Power, Brilliance, Creativity and Dreams

You must go into the dark in order to bring forth your light. When we suppress any feeling or impulse, we are also suppressing its polar opposite. If we deny our ugliness, we lessen our beauty. If we deny our fear, we minimize our courage. If we deny our greed, we also reduce our generosity. Our full magnitude is more than most of us can ever imagine.”  – From The Dark Side of the Light Chasers, May 1998

In this #1 New York Times best-seller, Debbie examines the fascinating process of projection – whereby we transfer our own unwanted qualities onto others – and demonstrates how our darkest tendencies, when embraced, can be used to fuel our dreams. You may literally feel your shoulders and your anxiety level drop after doing the transformational exercises at the end of each chapter. Take this courageous journey into your shadow side and find the key to total self-acceptance.

What are you hiding from yourself?

Why do we find ourselves disproportionately angry with the selfishness of a friend, the laziness of a coworker, the arrogance of a family member – or even the rudeness of a stranger? Why do the same old things get to us so easily, and so intensely? Our “same old things,” Debbie Ford explains, are clues to our dark sides – and to the emotions and traits that we fear most in ourselves.

In this enlightening guide, she explains how – consciously or unconsciously – we hide and deny our dark sides, rejecting these aspects of our true natures rather than giving ourselves the freedom to live authentically. Here she shows that it is possible to acknowledge and accept our so-called weaknesses – and that in fact, these qualities may prove to be important, hidden strengths. Perhaps a touch of “laziness” is just what the workaholic needs; perhaps some judicious “selfishness” can save us from exhaustion and resentment. Through the illuminating stories and practical exercises in this book, Debbie Ford shows us how to reconcile our darker impulses, find the gifts they offer – and reclaim our wholeness once again.

Why I Wrote This Book

After years of suffering and addiction, I worked to become whole again. I spent five years and $50,000 seeking out “the answer.” I tried all of the spiritual information and transformational processes at the time. I did mind control, therapy, hypnosis, rebirthing, transformational seminars, Buddhist retreats, Sufi dancing, drinking wheat grass, hanging crystals over my head, and subliminal programming where I made tapes that would affirm over and over that I was kind, I was loving, I was peaceful and I was happy. I tried any method of healing I came across. But still, after five years, a lot of money and traveling to all parts of the world, when I got quiet, I realized that I still didn’t like parts of who I was. I didn’t feel good about myself. I judged myself and I judged others. I blamed myself and I blamed the world. The peace that I believed was possible was something that always eluded me. Prayer gave me a glimpse of the powerful journey from fear to faith. I knew that there was a level of consciousness available to all of us, a place that would allow us to love ourselves for who we are. My search led me to understand what it is to be a human being, why we suffer, why we have this noise in our minds if it isn’t what we should be listening to and why we chase things in the outer world instead of listening to our own guidance and intuition in our inner world. My fascinating with that exploration as well as a conversation that Deepak Chopra was having about how we are a microcosm of the macrocosm led me to look for an explanation that existed outside of traditional psychological theory. I started praying for emotional education and spiritual wisdom. And it was in one of those divine moments when I realized how to embrace the world within me. This is the process I share with you in this book.
