Jesilyn M. Faust was born and raised in San Jose, California.  Jesi received a bachelor’s degree in political science from California State University, Long Beach, where she was a nationally ranked debater.  After becoming interested in studying Latin America, she received a master’s degree in Spanish language and literature from CSU Long Beach.  Jesi has studied Spanish and has undertaken volunteer work in several countries including Cuba, Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Mexico. Jesi presented her paper entitled Doña Bárbara: Redefining Gender Roles in 20th Century Venezuela at the 2014 Tropos conference at Michigan State University.  At the University of California at Santa Barbara, Jesi hopes to expand her study to trans-regional analysis that includes Northern Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.  Jesi’s current projects include translating Bartolome de las Casas’ Brevisima relacion de la destruccion de Africa.
